MOUNT BATUR · BALI
An active volcano, before the sun comes up.
A 1,717m rim climb, a jeep to the lookout, or just the hot springs. The hikes, jeep tours and combo days that get you to Bali's iconic sunrise summit and back to your hotel before lunch.
Before you book
Three ways up the volcano. Pick one.
Every Mount Batur day comes down to the same call: how do you actually reach the rim? The two-hour climb in the dark, the 4WD that drops you near the lookout, or skip the summit entirely and head straight for the hot springs on the lake. Each costs different money, gets you out of bed at a different hour, and trades a different thing for the view.

What the day looks like
From your hotel bed to the rim and back.
The sunrise hike day is on a tight clock. Here's the rhythm most operators run from an Ubud pickup, so you can decide if a 2am alarm fits your trip.

Only on Batur
A summit, a caldera lake, a steam-fed pool.
Most Indonesian volcanoes give you one of these. Batur gives you all three in the same morning, because the cone, the older caldera and the hot-spring aquifer are stacked on top of each other. Three things you cannot do this way anywhere else in Bali.
On the rim
Sunrise on an active volcano
Batur is still venting steam. Walk up in the dark, reach the 1,717m rim before sunrise, and the guides cook breakfast on volcanic vents while you watch the sun clear Mount Agung 30km east. Few summits let you stand on a working geothermal system.

Inside the caldera
A cone inside a caldera
Mount Batur sits inside an older 14km-wide caldera, with Lake Batur curling 700m below the summit. Drive in on the rim road and the geology is laid out in front of you: lava fields from the 2000 eruption, the cone, the lake, the older crater wall behind. Geography you can see in one frame.

After the climb
Volcanic hot springs at the lake
Toya Bungkah is the village on the lake where the geothermal water surfaces at 38°C. The pools sit right against Lake Batur with the cone behind. Most operators pair it with the sunrise hike or jeep so you soak the climb out of your legs before the drive back to Ubud.

If it's your first morning
Start with the climb everyone takes.
If you've got one shot at Mount Batur, it's this one. The hike-plus-breakfast format that put the volcano on every Bali itinerary.
The shortlist
Mount Batur's Most Popular Tours
Sunrise hikes, jeep climbs, hot-spring combos. The Batur mornings most travellers come back from raving about.
By pickup
Where are you staying?
Every Mount Batur operator does hotel pickup, but the wake-up call depends on where you sleep. Ubud puts you closest. Seminyak and Kuta mean a 2-hour predawn drive each way. Pick by where your room is.
By tour type
Or pick by what you actually want to do.
Hike if you came to climb. Jeep if you came for the photos. Hot springs if you're hiding from the alarm clock. Plus the combo days that pair Batur with a rice terrace, a waterfall or a temple on the way home.
Eggs on a volcano
Breakfast at the rim.
Guides cook breakfast on the volcanic vents at the top — eggs steamed inside the rock, banana sandwiches, instant coffee. It is the small touch every Batur review remembers. The three breakfast hikes worth booking for the food alone.
Skip the queue
Just you and the guide.
The standard sunrise hike runs in groups of 20+. Private tours keep your party to itself: your own pace, your own photo stops, your own minivan back. Three private options that read consistently well on the descent.
Stack the day
Beyond the rim.
By 10am you are off the mountain with the whole day still open. Operators pair Batur with the Tegallalang rice terraces, a Tirta Empul water-temple stop, a Sebatu waterfall or a swing over the valley — one pickup, two destinations. The combos worth the longer day.
